“Using an oral rinse for 30 seconds isn’t doing much more than making your mouth taste good,” says Alireza Panahpour, D.D.S, a holistic dentist in Bellevue, WA and author of The Good Dentist.

Dr. Panahpour's take: Any mouthwash that includes alcohol or flouride is doing more harm than good. Alcohol included in most mouthwashes changes the PH of your mouth, making it more acidic and susceptible to decay.

The only mouthwash Dr. Panahpour recommends is a solution of 25 parts water to 1 part bleach. Yes, bleach. It may not taste minty, but it's the best deterrent to the bad bacteria associated with both gum disease and heart disease, diabetes, and even cancer, without changing the PH of your mouth. And, a clean, healthy mouth is the best deterrent to bad breath, which is why you were looking for mouthwash anyway, wasn't it?
